Ukraine is receiving large crypto donations during its war with Russia. As the Russian invasion began in February 2022 Ukrainian government launched a wide crypto donation campaign for supporting its army. Here are the three months results.
Along with the status of ‘European guardians’, Ukraine came up as one of the first big crypto countries this spring.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a crypto legalization bill in March. And dozens of interesting crypto projects were officially launched in the country.
Despite some issues with the power-sharing of local exchanges, platforms like Binance widely supported Ukrainian resistance.
And even before the legalization of digital assets, the Ukrainian government launched a full-scale donation campaign to support their army.
They planned to gather $100 million. But they have already received even more.
War in Ukraine and crypto donations
According to the last Crystal company report, the crypto community has donated more than $125 million to Ukraine during the February 24 – May 12 period.
Ukrainian Armed Forces got more than half of this money. The other 48% went to different humanitarian projects.
The lion’s share of the crypto donatet do Ukraine during the war was transferred in Ethereum, Bitcoin, and USDT/BUSD stablecoins.
As of March, the Ukrainian Ministry of Digital Transformation managed to buy 5550 bulletproof vests and 500 plates for bulletproof vests, 3125 thermal ions and night optics, 3427 medical supplies, 410 000 dry rations, 500 helmets, and 60 radios for donated crypto.
The collected funds were also spent on anti-Russian propaganda, worldwide info campaigns about true events in Ukraine, cyber defense and restoration of digital infrastructure, etc.
“We operate in mostly Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Tether but we also got a huge donation of $5 million in Polkadot. A lot of people want to donate in other currencies, so we are now working on additional crypto wallets. For fiat, I think it is mostly U.S. dollar, and euro”, – Ukrainian deputy minister for Digital Transformation Oleksandr Bornyakov told TechCrunch.
